Knocking off a bunch of watching from 2017 and before but with work going like gangbusters there is just not enough time to write. Here is most of what I have seen. I know I am writing this but trust me this is nothing compared to what I normally do.
Super Dark Times (2017) - Exactly as advertised in the title. The effects of an accidental death create a tension that will have to break between to friends. It is an interesting study of the effects of guilt. The way too many time period references made pat seem like they were awkwardly trying too hard.
All the Boys Love Mandy Lane (2006) - Mandy (Amber Heard) is the gorgeous and unattainable prize for a group of teens heading to a ranch for a weekend of partying. When kids start dying and we see the killer is Mandy former best friend we know the plot can't be so simple as to show the killer this early. The twist is too easily foreshadowed so the rest is a not so interesting even if well executed slaughter.
House on Willow Street (2016) - When a group of desperates kidnap a rich girl in an attempt to get a ransom all things go wrong for them. Soon they are involved in a supernatural quagmire too deep to escape. This was surprising fun but so many really unlikable character made it hard to cheer for anyone.
Don't Kill It (2016)- The best kind of campy fun, and all out demon filled assault of violence and gore. Dolph Lundgren is the hard nosed demon hunter coming to the rescue of a small town attacked by a nasty demon. Played with a vigorous camp and with wonderful specials effects, and startling violence it is one you really have to see.
Death Note (2017) - Never mind the 100s of one star rating on from lovers of the anime that was the original source for this film, you take just the ones that did not know an anime exists and the rating is closer to 8 than 1. This film is a wonderful roller coaster ride that take several lefts when you expect a right. That makes it so very enjoyable. Adam Wingard does no wrong in my book.
I Am the Pretty Little Thing that Lives in the House (2016) - A slow burn to get to a place where it inevitably has to go. Was not overly impressed but still had some decent scares in it.
The Vault (2017) - Not a bad premise, a group of thugs go to rob a bank, but there is little cash. An assistant manager tells them about the vault in the basement. When trying to get to it they release the ghosts of another robbery 30 years earlier. Later there is a twist about who that manager was and only a couple of the robbers get away. Let me say though the tacked on ending fucking ruins any good will the film has built up.
The Damned (2014) - Original name Gallows Hill, is about a family in a bit of crisis who when collecting the 18 year old daughter get in a car accident in the mountains of Columbia. They seek shelter at an old closed Inn but the owner is not too friendly. When they discover a girl locked in a symbol inscribed box in the basement they let her out and then all hell breaks loose. A demon possession movie where the characters just stumble into it is not a horrible idea. The execution was a bit melodramatic at times.
